Four Luggage Buying Guidelines

For pilots, flight attendants and those people who are members of the frequent travelers club, owning good and durable luggage is very important. Airline people like stewardesses are said to “live” in their suitcases with the amount of traveling they do while performing their job. And just like wanting to have a well-built and robust home, the ideal luggage should be able to keep all your personal belonging safe and sound no matter where your feet may take you.

In shopping for luggage the criteria always includes good quality and highly functional features but these two terms may seem vague for the average shopper. Do not think that the most expensive luggage can do the best job. There are a lot of diamonds in the rough out there and you will find them as long as you know where to look. So here are a few points to guide you to make a fine purchase decision on your luggage shopping spree.

*Wheels. Luggage should be mobile. In dragging your luggage around, wheels are required or it will be greatly scratched and damaged only after a few meters. You are avoiding the bag because you do not want to always carry things on your shoulder. A bag on wheels will allow you to move about more quickly and easily. If you are light packer and you get all your things bundled in one bag, you will no longer have to wait for porters or a bellman to help you with your luggage as you can simply carry or drag them yourself. Think about the savings you will have on tips. Back to wheels. Get those made of rubber with ball bearings. These types of wheels last longer and are known for best performance.

*Luggage handles. The handles of your luggage should be long enough for you to reach it. Handles that are too short will keep you leaning on your side. Get luggage whose handles can be locked down. Two grip handles in bigger luggage would allow you to easily hoist, carry or lift your bag. This is important to note as you will do a lot of hoisting and lifting when you place your luggage in an overhead bin.

*Outer shell. Soft-sided, in-between and hard-sided are the three types of luggage shells. How to choose? Think of your purpose in buying the luggage. If you are looking for luggage that is expandable and lightweight then go for soft-sided shells. This type makes a good carry-on however they are more susceptible to damage. These luggages are pretty compact and do not get squeezed or squashed even if you place them in a tight spot. The hard-sided luggages, on the other hand, are quite heavy. These however offer superior protection for your belongings. The semi-soft or in between luggages may offer the best deal. They are expandable, they are not too heavy or too light and they still offer good protection.

*Zippers and locks. These keep your luggage closed and your things safely ensconced in it. And yes a damaged zipper or lock is not a good thing. You would not want your luggage to flap open and let the world see what you have inside especially the personal stuff. So make sure to get a luggage that has a durable and dependable zipper or lock.
